China lifts ban for Amway ; Government action further opens Alticor's biggest market
Rob Kirkbride / The Grand Rapids Press
ADA -- Amway Corp. and its rival Mary Kay Inc. received direct- selling licenses in China, ending a six-year ban that has limited the company's recruitment of distributors.
The relaxed rules could open further a market that has become Alticor's biggest, with more than $2 billion in sales. That represents almost a third of the Ada-based company's sales.
"It's going to be different for us to do business in China than other markets, but that's always been the case," spokesman Rob Zeiger said today. "We've always asked for a firm, long-term set of rules to play by, and that's what we have now.
"In the end, it's going to be for the better. Uncertainty (about rules) does not motivate people. With that uncertainty removed, we can get focused on selling products, and that's good."
Doing business in China is definitely not business as usual for Amway.
A pilot program for direct selling marks the first time it has been allowed since the China government stopped the practice in 1998, when a rash of illegal pyramid schemes caused huge economic losses around the country.
While Alticor's presence in China is well established, the impending rules to outline what can and cannot be done selling products directly to China's 1.3 billion consumers will affect the bottom line.
China was supposed to have rules for direct marketing in place by Dec. 11, 2004. The major point of contention for Alticor has been the ban on multi-level marketing.
After 1998, Amway China was forced to change its business model and it opened stores -- a first for Amway.
/Independent contractors still could sell door-to-door, but there was no chain of distributors as found in other markets. And ownership of the product remained with Amway China.
Those stores will remain under the new program, Zeiger said. The model has worked well for Amway China, which has 140 shops with 180,000 sales representatives selling more than 160 products.
