1. Introduction


1.1 Research Background

1.2 Research purpose and significance
This research aims to describe characteristics of tasks in Go for it,and evaluatesthese aspects. Tasks are main body of Go for it as it declares that it adapts task-basedlanguage teaching theory in it and implements adaptation according to New Curriculum.Commonly used in China, the teaching materials have great influences on teachingquality all over China, so attempting to improve its quality is necessary. As NewCurriculum sets up principles for language teaching in middle school,all textbooksshould be compiled according to these principles, evaluation of tasks in Go for it can helpto assess whether the teaching materials confirm to the standards given by Ministry ofEducation, the assessing results may have influence on the fame of the teaching materialsand affect their application situation in middle schools.At present, teachers in schools still take great importance to textbooks, and organizeteaching activities on the basis of the textbooks schools hand out most of the time,so thearrangement of tasks in Go for it may affect the teaching sequence and organization to agreat extent. Furthermore, teaching materials should arouse learners' interest, and thenthey can be absorbed in the tasks and teaching processes in classroom,which concernsmuch with the learning motivation and affects learning effects greatly. Accordingly,fromperspectives of teachers and students, the evaluation of tasks in Go for it is essential inimproving practical teaching effects.

2. Literature Review


2.1 New Curriculum and ELT in Secondary School
With the development of culture and economy in China, education faces challengebecause the past curriculum cannot satisfy the needs of the new age. The knowledgeorientation and subject orientation should be transformed thoroughly; they had profoundand lasting influences to Chinese students but they do not accord with needs of this age.There has been growing concern that heavily examination-centered education is not onlyharmful to student's well-being, leading to undue psychological burdens and alienationfrom schooling,but is also ineffective in cultivating the skills and dispositions that arenecessary for competition in the global information society (Ministry of Education, 2002).Accordingly, China sets a series of new standards for the courses in basic education,which is called New Curriculum.New Curriculum is a set of principles for composing teaching materials, teachingmethods, and evaluating teaching processes and results. 2.2 Evaluation of Teaching Materials
Tasks are closely related to the concept of task-based language teaching ortask-based instruction, which originated in communicative language teaching. Richardset.al (1986) defines a pedagogical task as an activity or action which is carried out as theresult of processing or understanding language. They consider that the use of a variety ofdifferent kinds of tasks in language teaching is said to make language teaching morecommunicative since it provides a purpose for a classroom activity which goes beyondthe practice of language for its own sake. Breen (1987) offers another definition that'task' is assumed to refer to a range of workplans which have the overall purposes offacilitating language learning from the simple and brief exercise type, to more complexand lengthy activities such as group problem-solving or simulations and decision-making.And Nunan (2004) gives his definition that a pedagogical task is a piece of classroomwork that involves learners in comprehending,manipulating, producing or interacting inthe target language while their attention is focused on mobilizing their grammaticalknowledge in order to express meaning,and in which the intention is to convey meaningrather than to manipulate form.

6.1 Suggestions for Improving tasks in Go for it
Compilation of tasks in Go for it is by and large in accordance with the standardsand principles of ideology, interestingness, scientificity and flexibility in NewCurriculum on the basis of analysis and evaluation of tasks in them. Though there aresome shortcomings still,compilers can perfect them in the future. In ideal condition,tasks in the teaching materials should meet students' interests and broaden their horizons.Meanwhile, the tasks also should focus on their individual differences. As for teachers,tasks should give spaces to teachers playing their teaching experiences and teachingstyles. Here are some suggestions for improving tasks in Go for it in detail. With economic development in China, Chinese people are increasingly having morecommunicating and cooperating opportunities with foreign countries, but thiscommunication does not mean we have to accept all. The content chosen in teachingmaterials should compare local culture with foreign cultures. Making students know offoreign cultures should not substitute helping them understand our own culture. Studentswho are learning Go for it are teenagers in the initial process of forming their own worldview, so the content in textbooks has great influence on their cognition.

3) Teachers have to re-understand their roles in classes,they should be givenautonomous rights to rearrange tasks, task contents and make research on learners' needs,and then they can really change textbook-centered to learner-centered.
4) Teachers should come to know of more about students in future teaching bycommunicating with them, observing their performance carefully in class and makingmore reflections to them.
